Why Ledger Live Desktop?
Ledger Live Desktop is the official companion app that lets you manage your Ledger wallet securely from your computer. Ledger Live provides a unified interface for account management, transaction signing, portfolio tracking, and firmware updates. Ledger Live Desktop ensures keys remain on the device while giving you a polished dashboard to monitor balances and activity.
Step 1 — Ledger Live download & install
Always start with the official source when you download Ledger Live. Visit the Ledger website and choose the correct OS installer. After downloading, run the installer and follow on-screen prompts. Using the official Ledger Live download mitigates risks from counterfeit installers and ensures you have the latest, secure Ledger Live Desktop release.
Run installer
Open the downloaded installer file and follow the setup wizard. Grant only necessary permissions and avoid third-party installers.
Launch app
Start Ledger Live and select your language and preferences. Ledger Live setup will guide you through the initial onboarding.
Update app
Ledger Live may prompt for updates—install them to keep features and security current.
Connect device
Use the official USB cable to connect your Ledger hardware wallet. Unlock with your PIN to proceed.
Step 2 — Initialize and secure your Ledger wallet
During first-time setup you can create a new device or restore an existing wallet from your recovery phrase. Set a strong PIN on the device and store your recovery phrase offline. Ledger Live and the Ledger device will never ask for your recovery seed in the app—if prompted, stop immediately. These steps are fundamental to Ledger wallet security and should be followed every time.
Step 3 — Add accounts & manage coins
In Ledger Live, go to the Accounts tab and add accounts for the cryptocurrencies you use. Ledger Live supports many coins; select an asset, add an account, and confirm the account creation on the hardware device. You can add multiple accounts per coin for better portfolio organization. Ledger Live keeps accounts synced, lets you label them, and provides transaction history for easy tracking.
Secure transaction signing
Every transaction is signed on your Ledger device. Ledger Live prepares unsigned transactions and the Ledger hardware displays transaction details for confirmation. Verify addresses and amounts on the device before approving.
Firmware & app updates
Keep Ledger Live Desktop and your device firmware up to date. Firmware updates patch vulnerabilities and add compatibility for new assets—install updates through Ledger Live.
Portfolio & analytics
Ledger Live offers a consolidated portfolio view, including valuations and performance. Use portfolio tools for tax reporting, audits, or simple balance checks.
Recovery planning
Backup your recovery phrase on paper or a metal plate. Store copies in separate secure locations to recover your Ledger wallet if the device is lost or damaged.
Troubleshooting common issues
If Ledger Live does not detect your device, try a different USB port, use the original cable, or restart the app. Ensure your device firmware and Ledger Live app are updated. If persistent issues occur, consult official support and provide app logs for faster resolution. Never share your recovery phrase with support or online chats.
Best practices — keeping your Ledger wallet safe
Download Ledger Live only from the official Ledger website. Use a dedicated, secure computer if possible. Never enter your recovery phrase on any computer or website. Use a strong device PIN and consider passphrase-protected hidden wallets for higher security. Regularly review connected apps and revoke permissions you no longer use.
